November 22, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, the U.S. Senate confirmed Amir H. Ali to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and Sharad Desai to the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.

Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) issued the following statement:

“I want to extend my sincere congratulations to Amir Ali and Sharad Desai on their confirmations to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and Arizona, respectively! Amir Ali’s confirmation is historic as he will be the first Arab American and first Muslim judge to serve a lifetime appointment on this court. Similarly, Sharad Desai made history as the first Asian American judge in the District of Arizona. Their demonstrated expertise in the law and commitment to protecting civil rights and equity for all Americans throughout their careers make them eminently qualified for these roles, and they will be tremendous assets to our judicial system. I am grateful for President Biden’s efforts to nominate highly qualified and diverse candidates to federal judicial seats, and I thank Senate Majority Leader Schumer for his work to confirm these nominees successfully.”
