CAPAC Statement on the Charges Against Congresswoman LaMonica McIver

May 19, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Grace Meng, Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, issued the following statement on the charges made against Congresswoman LaMonica McIver (D-NJ).

“Members of Congress have the authority and constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. That is exactly what Congresswoman McIver and her congressional colleagues were doing at the ICE facility at Delaney Hall.

"It is deeply disturbing that the Executive Branch would pursue criminal charges against a Member of Congress simply for doing their job. This is a clear and unprecedented obstruction of the checks and balances between branches of government.

"We will not tolerate the weaponization of our justice system. The Constitution is clear. Congress is a co-equal branch of government, and this administration’s escalation is a direct assault on the Legislative Branch’s constitutional powers.

"CAPAC condemns this political maneuver against Representative McIver.”
