CAPAC Welcomes DREAMers’ National Immigration Road Tour to D.C.
WASHINTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), and Congressman Mike Honda (CA-17), CAPAC Immigration Taskforce Co-Chair, joined several Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) undocumented youth approved under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The DREAMers are in Washington D.C. to mark the one-year anniversary of DACA as part of their nine-city national road tour entitled, “DREAM Riders: Road Trip Across America Campaign.”
Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair: “In the year since Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals took effect, more than 365,000 young men and women have been brought out of the shadows of our nation – the only country they have ever called home. In California alone, nearly a quarter of a million DREAM students are Asian or Pacific Islander, comprising nearly half of all DREAMers in the University of California system. These young people study in our schools, play in our neighborhoods, and pledge allegiance to our flag. While DACA provides them with temporary protection, a pathway to citizenship is the only way to remove the uncertainty that DREAMers and their families face every day. As Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass true and meaningful comprehensive immigration reform.”
Congressman Mike Honda (CA-17), CAPAC Immigration Taskforce Co-Chair: “As the Immigration Taskforce Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, I proudly support action to protect the hard-working undocumented youth in this country in order to form a more perfect union. America is the only home they have ever known, and here is where they have chosen to pursue higher education and contribute to our society and economy. This is a human issue -- one with countless stories of trials and tribulations -- and in our fight for comprehensive immigration reform, we must ensure fair and humane treatment of all human beings, regardless of country of origin and immigration status.”
