June 22, 2021

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Senate voted 51-50 to confirm Kiran Ahuja to be the Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). As the head of OPM, Ahuja will play a vital role in protecting and empowering federal employees while promoting a federal workforce that looks more like America. Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) and CAPAC First Vice Chair Rep. Grace Meng (NY-06) issued the following statements:

“Congratulations to Kiran Ahuja on her well-deserved confirmation to lead the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM)!” said Rep. Judy Chu. “Throughout her impressive career, Kiran has demonstrated her strong commitment to building an inclusive government that works for all people. I am confident that her skills as a trusted organizer and leader will contribute to her success as the new OPM Director. I have been proud to know and work with Kiran for years due to her deep roots within the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, including as the Executive Director of President Obama’s White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. I know that her knowledge and expertise will benefit our entire government as she ensures that the federal workforce is filled with talented individuals who reflect the rich diversity of our nation. I commend President Biden on his appointment of another exceptional AAPI leader to join his administration and look forward to seeing the great work that Kiran will accomplish in her new role.”

“I am thrilled to congratulate Kiran Ahuja on her confirmation as the Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM),” said Rep. Grace Meng. “Kiran has been an incredible public servant and trailblazer with more than two decades of leadership experience in the public, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors. From being the founding executive director of an advocacy organization dedicated to empowering AAPI women to her time as the executive director of President Obama’s White House Initiative on Asian American Pacific Islanders, and to being the chief of staff at the OPM – Kiran has shown steadfast strength and vision. And as the first Indian American to lead OPM, she will bring a wealth of experience and perspective to the role. I have the utmost confidence that she will excel at the helm of OPM – and take the agency to new heights. I applaud Kiran Ahuja’s confirmation and look forward to working with her and President Biden to build a federal workforce that looks like America.”
