CAPAC Applauds Nomination of Norman C. Bay to Chair the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

Washington, D.C. – Today, the White House nominated Norman C. Bay as Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). If confirmed, Bay would only be the third Asian American to head a government department or agency during the President’s second term. Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released the following statements:

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), Chair: “I commend President Obama for his nomination of Norman Bay to lead the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. As the Director of FERC’s Office of Enforcement, Mr. Bay has demonstrated a proven track record of excellence, and I am confident that he possesses the leadership and talent to thrive in his new role. I urge my Senate colleagues to move swiftly on his confirmation.”

Congressman Mike Honda (CA-17), CAPAC Chair Emeritus: “I am pleased to congratulate Norman C. Bay on his nomination to Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). He has served admirably as the Director of the Office of Enforcement at FERC, and I am confident he will do an excellent job in his new position. I commend President Obama for recognizing Norman Bay’s hard work throughout the years and promoting more AAPIs to positions of influence. His nomination signals another great step forward for the Asian American community."

Background:

Norman C. Bay is the Director of the Office of Enforcement at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), a position he has held since 2009. Prior to this, Mr. Bay was a Professor of Law at the University of New Mexico from 2002 to 2009. From 2000 to 2001, Mr. Bay was the United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico. He was an Assistant U.S. Attorney from 1989 to 2000, an Attorney-Adviser at the United States Department of State from 1988 to 1989, and a Law Clerk for the Honorable Otto R. Skopil, Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1986 to 1987. Mr. Bay received a B.A. from Dartmouth College and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
