CAPAC Chair Judy Chu Commemorates Black History Month

February 11, 2014

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), released the following statement in honor of Black History Month:

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair:
“This month, I join Americans across the country to celebrate Black History Month and recognize the numerous contributions of the African American community. From Harriet Tubman, who guided slaves to freedom, to the Freedom Riders, who challenged segregation, African American pioneers have paved the way for progress in the United States.

“Nowhere is this more evident than in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. As we celebrate the 50 year anniversary of this landmark legislation, we are reminded of the courage of those who fought to secure the civil rights of all Americans.

“The fight for equality and justice continues today through leaders like my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). Today, CBC Chairwoman Marcia L. Fudge and I continue the legacy of working together to create new ladders of opportunity for our communities. From protecting voting rights to addressing income inequality, we will continue to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to attain the American Dream.”
