CAPAC Chair Judy Chu on Supreme Court Decision in Fisher v. University of Texas

June 24, 2013

Washington D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's decision in Fisher v. University of Texas-Austin:

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court in Fisher v. University of Texas preserves the principle that universities may continue to consider racial and ethnic diversity as one factor among many in their admissions policies.

“Barriers to higher education continue to exist for many minority students, including Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Despite misperceptions that AAPI students excel in education, 50-60 percent of some AAPI subgroups have never enrolled in college. Equal opportunity policies, like those used by the University of Texas, promote diverse learning environments and create a fair process to ensure that talented students from all backgrounds have access to a quality education.

“We will be watching this case closely and are hopeful that the University of Texas at Austin’s policies will be upheld by the Fifth Circuit.”
