CAPAC Chair Statement on Nomination of John Tien as Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security

April 12, 2021

Washington, D.C. — Today, President Biden announced the nomination of John Tien as Deputy Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), released the following statement praising the nomination:

“I am proud to congratulate John Tien on his nomination to serve as President Biden’s Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. This is the second highest ranking position at DHS and plays an integral role in ensuring DHS is effective at keeping our country safe and protected. John has exactly the type of experience and temperament needed to excel in this role. As the Senior Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan in President Obama’s National Security Council from 2009-2011, and having served in Iraq as a Tank Battalion Commander before that, John understands the threats facing our country and how to lead others in addressing them. And not only does he have a long and distinguished career, it is a groundbreaking one as well. John was the first Asian American to ever serve as West Point’s First Captain and Brigade Commander, which is the US Military Academy’s top ranked cadet position. And now, I am thrilled that he will be bringing that experience to the Biden Administration where he will be the first Asian American in history to serve as Deputy Secretary of DHS. I want to thank President Biden for his commitment to nominating qualified candidates who represent the diversity of this country, and urge the Senate to move swiftly on John’s confirmation.”
