CAPAC Chair Statement on Shooting in Jacksonville, FL
WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Saturday, August 26, three Black people were killed by a white gunman in Jacksonville, Florida. This attack is currently being investigated as a federal hate crime.
CAPAC Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) released the following statement:
“I was devastated by the news that three Black Americans lost their lives in yet another horrific act of violence this past Saturday. My heart goes out to the victims, and their loved ones, who were specifically targeted because of their race in this hate-fueled attack using an assault rifle. As Chair of CAPAC, I remain in firm solidarity with my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus as well as with the Black community in Jacksonville and across the nation during this time of mourning. White supremacy and racism have no place in our country. Once again, I call upon my colleagues in Congress to pass commonsense gun reform so such atrocities do not keep happening.”
CAPAC endorsed the Assault Weapons Act of 2023 in February following the mass shooting in Monterey Park, California.
