WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Grace Meng (NY-06) released a statement following President Trump’s executive order restricting access to the ballot box:
“President Trump’s executive order is nothing more than a power grab to strip Americans of their fundamental right to vote. Under this order, voting by mail—a method proven to be a safe and secure way for millions of Americans to cast their ballot, including Donald Trump himself—would be restricted. This would have a disproportionate impact on Asian American voters, with nearly three out of four Asian Americans casting early or absentee ballots in 2020, the highest rate of any racial group.
“Trump's executive order would also create a national voter list based on flawed databases that incorrectly flag U.S. citizens as noncitizens, then share that data with the Department of Homeland Security to aid their violent and illegal immigration enforcement tactics. Such actions threaten the safety and privacy of our communities.
“As we have seen throughout his presidency, Donald Trump will do anything it takes to cling to power. This voter suppression order is no different. CAPAC will not rest until this unlawful action is defeated.”
BACKGROUND:
On March 31, President Trump signed Executive Order (EO) 14399, titled “Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections,” to dictate how federal elections are to be conducted by restricting access to mail-in voting and creating a national voter list based on flawed data.
The existence of widespread voter fraud in the United States is a myth; in fact, government investigations across the nation have all found little to no evidence of fraud in their respective states.
