CAPAC Members Commemorate Start of Ramadan

April 23, 2020

Washington, D.C. – Today, Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released the following statements to mark the month of Ramadan, which begins tonight at sunset. Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar for Muslims, who spend their days fasting from sunrise to sunset, giving charity, and engaging in worship and reflection.

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair:

“I want to wish all the Muslims in my district, the country, and around the world a very blessed Ramadan. While our circumstances this year may prevent the community from gathering at iftars and evening prayers in the mosque, they cannot stop us from still celebrating together in spirit, wherever we are. Celebrating our communities and our responsibilities and ties to each other is more important now than ever, and I am proud to stand with the American Muslim community and celebrate their many contributions to our nation. I hope this holy month brings all who celebrate joy, peace, and wisdom as well as good health. Ramadan Mubarak!”

Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-06), CAPAC First Vice Chair:

“I send my warmest wishes to the Muslim community in Queens and across the globe as we mark the beginning of Ramadan. While this time coincides with the challenges of COVID-19, I hope this holy month instills reaffirmation of generosity, compassion, and faith. May we stand together to celebrate our diversity and embrace empathy. To all who are observing this holiday, Ramadan Mubarak!”

Congressman Gil Cisneros (CA-39):

“I want to wish Muslims in California’s 39th District and across the country a blessed Ramadan. May this holy month of prayer and fasting be filled with peace, reflection, and spiritual rejuvenation. While celebrating Ramadan will look different this year, I hope you’re still able to connect with family and friends online. To all those who celebrate, Ramadan Mubarak.”

Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34):

“As the holy month of Ramadan begins, I wish those observing this sacred time good health and safety. I hope this important month brings great reflection and compassion for Muslims in California’s 34th Congressional District, in the United States, and across the globe. As millions celebrate in fasting and prayer, I wish you peace in your homes, mosques, and with your families. Ramadan Mubarak!”

Congressman Ro Khanna (CA-17):

“Wishing Muslims across California’s 17th district a joyous and blessed Ramadan. Especially in a moment like this, I hope the days ahead bring spiritual cleansing and renewal for all celebrating. There’s never been a greater need for the generosity and community Ramadan brings into so many homes. Ramadan Mubarak.”

Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04):

“Right now, American and Nevadan families have very real fears for both their economic security and for their health and safety. In this month, your community demonstrates the power of selflessness, sacrifice, and the human spirit in the face of adversity. This Ramadan will likely be different from any you have had before. With limits on gatherings and restrictions on movement in place due to stay at home orders, many of the activities that typically define this month may be modified and held in new ways or cancelled altogether. While this may present challenges in your ability to celebrate this time as you normally would, I know that the spirit of the Muslim community will prevail and hope that this Ramadan may even provide its own unique set of blessings. I wish you all a healthy, safe, and joyous Ramadan.”

Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03):

“As Muslims begin observing Ramadan, I want to wish our Muslim community in southern Nevada and across the world a blessed month of fasting, reflection, and prayer. I hope this month brings you a deeper understanding of self and a stronger spirit of giving. Our Muslim family, friends, and neighbors are so important to the fabric of Nevada’s 3rd District, and it’s an honor to represent such a vibrant Muslim community in Congress. Ramadan Mubarak!”

Congresswoman Katie Porter (CA-45):

“I am so thrilled to join my CAPAC colleagues in wishing a peaceful Ramadan to our Muslim community in Orange County and across the country. I know that Ramadan begins at a challenging time for our nation this year. I hope that this time of reflection can serve as an opportunity for all of us to draw strength from the blessings in our lives: our faiths, our families, and our communities. Ramadan Mubarak!”

Congressman Adam Smith (WA-09):

“I wish my Muslim friends in the Ninth District and around the world a peaceful and reflective Ramadan. This Ramadan will be uniquely challenging as #COVID19 prevents communities from joining in celebration and contemplation, but by staying home, we can get through this together. I wish you and your families safety, health, and happiness in this trying time. During the holiest time of the year for Muslims, I renew my commitment to fostering inclusivity and celebrating religious diversity. Ramadan Mubarak!”
