Meng, Hirono Introduce Bipartisan, Bicameral Resolution Recognizing May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May 4, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Grace Meng (NY-06), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), and U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) led their colleagues in introducing a resolution marking May 2026 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. This resolution celebrates the many contributions AANHPI communities have made to the nation. This resolution also emphasizes the importance of celebrating diversity, especially at a time when programs supporting minority communities are under attack.

“May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a time to honor our communities’ immeasurable contributions to our nation’s history, culture, and prosperity,” said Representative Grace Meng, Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. “Whether your family passed through Ellis Island, immigrated to work on the sugarcane plantations of Hawaiʻi or fled war-torn areas as refugees, our stories are part of the American story and deserve to be told for generations to come. I am proud to co-lead this resolution with Senator Hirono to ensure our communities’ achievements are formally recognized in the halls of Congress, especially as we mark the 250th anniversary of the United States this year.”

“Every May, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander communities come together to remember the challenges we have overcome and our many contributions that have shaped our country. Despite the Trump regime’s relentless attacks on the AANHPI community, they cannot erase the truth. Our communities have been part of our country’s story since its founding, fighting for the same fundamental promises of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” said Senator Hirono. “This resolution celebrates the persevering spirit of our communities and reminds us all to continue fighting for a more inclusive future.”

The resolution is co-sponsored by Representatives Barragán (CA-44), Bell (MO-01), Bera (CA-06), Case (HI-01), Chu (CA-28), Cisneros (CA-31), Clarke (NY-09), Correa (CA-46), Craig (MN-02), Davis (IL-07), DelBene (WA-01), Dexter (OR-03), Dingell (MI-06), Fletcher (TX-07), Foushee (NC-04), Garamendi (CA-08), García (IL-04), Goldman (NY-10), Gomez (CA-34), Green (TX-09), Jayapal (WA-07), Kamlager-Dove (CA-37), Kennedy (NY-26), Khanna (CA-17), King-Hinds (MP), Krishnamoorthi (IL-08), Lee (NV-03), Lieu (CA-36), Matsui (CA-07), McClain Delaney (MD-06), McClellan (VA-04), McCollum (MN-04), Menendez (NJ-08), Min (CA-47), Moulton (MA-06), Moylan (GU), Mullin (CA-15), Nadler (NY-12), Norton (DC), Radewagen (AS), Ross (NC-02), Scott (VA-03), Sherman (CA-32), Simon (CA-12), Strickland (WA-10), Subramanyam (VA-10), Takano (CA-39), Thanedar (MI-13), Tlaib (MI-12), Tokuda (HI-02), Torres (CA-35), Tran (CA-45), Vargas (CA-52), Watson Coleman (NJ-12).
