Washington, D.C. – On Monday, President Trump issued an executive order limiting legal immigration through the rest of 2020. The order restricts H-1B visas, which include specialty occupations such as tech workers and postdoctoral scholars; H-2B, temporary non-agricultural workers; certain categories of J visas, which includes international workers typically hired to temporarily fill jobs like au pairs, camp counselors, and more; and L-visas, which are used for intracompany transfers.

Today, the Supreme Court ruled that President Trump’s order to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals was arbitrary and capricious and violated the law. The decision means that almost 700,000 DACA recipients will continue to have the ability to apply for work authorizations and live without fear of deportation. In addition, new applicants who are eligible for DACA can now apply. CAPAC Chair Judy Chu (CA-27) issued the following statement:
Washington, D.C. - Today marks the eighth anniversary of the creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Since its inception in 2012, DACA has granted protections to nearly 700,000 undocumented youth who were brought to this country as children, allowing them to stay and work in the United States without fear of deportation. The program was rescinded in September 2017 by the Trump Administration and the Supreme Court is expected to rule this month on whether the program can remain in place.

Washington, D.C. – One year ago today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act, which would provide a pathway to citizenship for over 2.5 million U.S. residents, including Dreamers – those eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) – Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients. This date coincides with the birthday of Vincent Chin, whose brutal murder in 1982 sparked national outrage and led to the pan-ethnic AAPI movement that exists today. The House of Representatives today passed H.R 6800, the Heroes Act, a $3 trillion bill to support businesses, families, and state and local governments as the coronavirus crisis continues. Under the Heroes Act, State and local governments would receive billions to help maintain payrolls and make up for lost revenue due to stay-at-home orders. Small businesses would see additional relief under an expanded Paycheck Protection Program that will last to December 31st, 2020, and is more targeted to underserved communities.
