WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today marks the 25th Anniversary of the founding of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC). The bi-cameral Caucus was established on May 16, 1994 by Secretary Norman Y. Mineta to ensure that federal legislation and policies reflect the needs of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. The 116th Congress includes a record 20 Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Members of Congress and 73 CAPAC Members total.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today marks the 150th Anniversary of the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, which linked the continental United States from coast to coast and ushered in a new era of American prosperity. The completion of the railroad would not have been possible without the labor of over 12,000 Chinese railroad workers who helped to build this engineering marvel even in the face of great adversity and racial discrimination.

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Today marks the start of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which commemorates the history, contributions, and achievements of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community throughout the month of May. May is officially designated as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month” by section 102 of title 36, United States Code. The observance originally began as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week,” which was established through a joint Congressional resolution in 1978.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) joined House Democrats in introducing H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act of 2019. The bill, which was co-authored by Reps. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), and Yvette Clarke (D-NY), provides protection from deportation, work authorization, and a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers as well as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) commemorated Fred Korematsu Day, which is celebrated on January 30 each year to mark Fred Korematsu’s birthday. CAPAC Senator Mazie K. Hirono (HI) and CAPAC Second Vice Chair Mark Takano (CA-41) introduced a bill to posthumously award Fred Korematsu with the Congressional Gold Medal. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released the following statements to mark the second anniversary of Donald Trump’s signing of Executive Order 13769 on January 27, 2017, which restricted travel to the U.S. from several Muslim-majority countries and prohibited refugees from entering the country.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, leaders of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) issued a joint-statement opposing the anti-immigrant Trump-McConnell proposal that will be considered in the Senate later today. The McConnell amendment would trade temporary protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients in order to provide $5.7 billion for Donald Trump’s border wall. It would also further militarize the border and reduce protections for asylum seekers.
