Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Senate voted 53-42 to confirm Theodore David Chuang to the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Mr. Chuang is the first person of Asian descent to serve as an Article III judge in the state of Maryland. With this historic confirmation, the Obama Administration tripled the number of Asian American and Pacific Islander judges on the federal bench. Started in 2003 as a post 9-11 intelligence-gathering operation, this unit, known as the Demographics Unit, eavesdropped on conversations and created detailed files on the eating, praying, and shopping habits of the Muslim community.
