WASHINGTON — Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), released the following statement on the passing of Congressman Mark Takai (HI-01):

Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 231-196 to pass H.R. 5538, the FY 2017 Interior and Environment Appropriations Bill.

Washington, D.C. – Last night, the U.S. Senate voted unanimously to pass S. 1555, a bill authored by Senator Mazie K. Hirono to award Filipino World War II veterans with a Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their dedicated service during World War II.  In the U.S. House of Representatives, a counterpart to this bill (H.R. 2737) was introduced by Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and currently has 172 co-sponsors. House rules require Congressional Gold Medal legislation to have 290 co-sponsors before it can be considered for a vote.

Washington, D.C. – On Thursday night, a peaceful protest in response to the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile turned deadly as five Dallas, TX police officers were killed and seven others wounded by at least one sniper. Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court released a 4-3 decision in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin in favor of the University of Texas at Austin’s ability to consider race in the holistic review of an applicant in the higher education admissions process. Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court released a 4-4 decision in United States v. Texas, the legal challenge to President Obama’s Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs. The deadlock ruling upholds an injunction by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals to block the implementation of these programs. However, the ruling does not affect the original DACA program launched in June 2012.
