Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 245-180 to pass H. Res. 275, a resolution condemning the horrific shootings in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 16, 2021 and reaffirming the House of Representative’s commitment to combating hate, bigotry, and violence against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. The resolution was introduced by Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Chair Rep. Judy Chu and co-led by Reps. Carolyn Bourdeaux, Lucy McBath, and Nikema Williams.

Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 364-62 to pass the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act introduced by Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Rep. Grace Meng (NY-06). The bill, which passed the Senate by a vote of 94-1 in April, will help to address the alarming surge in anti-Asian violence that has occurred throughout the COVID-19 pandemic by improving hate crime tracking and reporting and providing resources to victims of hate crimes.

Washington, D.C. – Today, Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) observed the third annual National Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Day Against Bullying and Hate. This date coincides with the birthday of Vincent Chin, who was brutally murdered in 1982 in a hate crime. Chin’s death sparked national outrage and led to the pan-ethnic AAPI movement that exists today. CAPAC Members released the following statements:

Washington, D.C. – Today, Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) met with Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House. The meeting, which comes during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, followed a meeting between CAPAC leaders and President Biden in April, which Vice President Harris also attended. The  attendees at today’s meeting included CAPAC Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), Rep. Ami Bera (CA-07), Rep. Stephanie Murphy (FL-07), Rep. Andy Kim (NJ-03), and Del. Michael San Nicolas (GU).

Washington, D.C. – Today, President Biden gave an address to a joint session of Congress detailing his plans to end the coronavirus pandemic, rebuild our economy, improve our immigration system, and more. During the speech, the President also addressed what his Administration is doing to help combat anti-Asian hate crimes, including the President’s support for the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act introduced by CAPAC First Vice Chair Rep. Grace Meng and Sen. Mazie Hirono which includes the text of the NO HATE Act introduced by CAPAC Chair Rep.

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Senate voted 51-49 to confirm Vanita Gupta as Associate Attorney General, the third highest ranking position at the Department of Justice (DOJ). She is the first woman of color and the first civil rights attorney to serve in this position, as well as the highest ranking Asian American to ever serve at DOJ.
