Within the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, HIV/AIDS is a significant public health concern which is often compounded by strong cultural stigmas and linguistic barriers to care. Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez formally inducted Chinese Railroad Workers into the Labor Hall of Honor. Approximately 12,000 Chinese laborers helped to complete the First Transcontinental Railroad between 1865 and 1869. They are the first Asian Americans to be represented in the Labor Hall of Honor since its establishment in 1988. Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed Indira Talwani to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Ms. Talwani is the first person of Asian descent to serve as an Article III judge in the commonwealth of Massachusetts and the first person of Asian descent to serve in the First Circuit. Washington, D.C. – Today, fourteen Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander leaders from across the nation were sworn in as new commissioners for the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The swearing-in ceremony took place during an opening ceremony at the U.S. Department of the Interior to kick off Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Mr. Chuang is the first person of Asian descent to serve as an Article III judge in the state of Maryland. With this historic confirmation, the Obama Administration tripled the number of Asian American and Pacific Islander judges on the federal bench.
